Carpet slippers, the latest 'luxe' of French fashionistas

Carpet slippers may seem a fuddy-duddy accessory for an evening at home, but French makers of the footwear are trying to give them a more stylish feel. The felt-soled and quilted Charentaise has been around since the time of King Louis XIV, though nowadays it is to be found less in royal wardrobes than cheap and cheerful stores stocked with Chinese-made models. To combat the trend, maker Rodinaud has put a creative spin on the footwear, making some out of cashmere or fake mink, and giving them a redesign. It staged a runway show at the Eiffel Tower in Paris to highlight its revamped slipper as a luxury accoutrement.

Fashionistas mob H&M's Roberto Cavalli collection

Once again the Swedish retail giant H&M has created mayhem at its stores with its operation to democratize elite designer labels by bringing them in-house. This time it was Italy's Roberto Cavalli, known for his form-fitting dresses, who designed a collection for the group. The launch of the line, limited to only a handful of Hennis and Moritz stores in Northern Europe, created a near-stampede as fashionistas rushed to scoop up as many of Cavalli's 20 items as possible. H&M began its luxury fashion line operations with a collection by Karl Lagerfeld in 2004, followed by Stella McCartney and Viktor and Rolf. Images of the crowds at H&M's main Amsterdam store.
